19 avril 2020, 17h Lancaster – Vie au bord de l’eau

Résumé
This series of recordings were made from Glasson Basin Marina, near Lancaster in the North West of England. The marina is adjacent to Glasson Dock on the River Lune estuary and is separated from the Irish Sea by a lock. Although close to Lancaster, Glasson feels remote—there is a very small village here, which is surrounded by farmland, and the area is of very low density. It is also home to Glasson Dock—a working port that handles around 150,000 tonnes of cargo each year. Despite its small size, Glasson plays a role in the infrastructure of the towns and cities of the North West of England, and, as such, it sits at an interstice between the urban and the rural.Estuaries are also ecological interstices, sitting at the boundary between land and sea and between river and sea—i.e. between fresh and salt water. Such conditions create particularly productive, complex, and dynamic natural ecosystems—regions of transition between biomes, known as ecotones. At Glasson, multiple human and non-human rhythms intersect—from those of the sun, moon, and tides, and the various flora and fauna that can be found here to the movement of ships and the loading and unloading of cargo. At this time of social and economic lockdown, the anthropogenic sounds here are greatly reduced. The port is quiet—not entirely silent but much quieter than usual. Few vessels come and go, and the usual fleet of lorries has become no more than a trickle. The marina is quieter than usual too. Only the handful of residents that live here now have access. The greatest sources of sound are the wind, which comes and goes, and the sounds of nature. Otherwise, the days are very quiet, only occasionally punctuated by voices, an engine, a power tool, or the crunch of gravel beneath the tyres of a car.
